About René
René grew up in war torn Zimbabwe and yet she had an amazing childhood full of adventure, love and animals. René married a local man and her oldest son was born in Harare before they were forced to flee to South Africa. There she had two more children in, Kwazulu Natal, while she began her career working with children affected by trauma, violence and abuse. Fourteen years later René's young family moved to USA where she continued to work with dysfunctional families and helped parents to learn new methods of parenting children from hard places.
René completed a Degree in Early Education and Child Development and moved to the UK where she began to work with victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence – specifically women and children in the first instance, but eventually René was privileged to plan and open the first dedicated male refuge in the South West of England.
René now lives on a small holding in mid Cornwall with her very tolerant husband and her family of therapy animals! She continues to work in the field of domestic abuse, traumatised children and animals and is currently fills her spare time writing her second book (Animal-Assisted Therapy Activity Book) and completing the fine art sketches for her therapeutic colouring book due out soon. On a beautiful Cornish day René can be found at her desk with a Golden Retriever, 'Roxy', resting on her feet or walking though rock pools together on the beach. René's family is her inspiration and Roxy is a working partner and her therapist.
The Therapist
René completed a diploma in Animal-Assisted Therapy and worked under the Practicum in Chicago for Theraplay®; an attachment-based play therapy which helps to repair the parent/child relationship and works to help the child feel loved and valued. Now, René has developed Playful Beasts Therapy©; a hybrid involving animal-assisted therpay and Theraplay® techniques, integrating aspects of these two therapies to provide a varied and enriching therapeutic experience for children and families.
René started the Noah’s Ark Family Project CIC in 2009 and is the CEO and Principle Therapist. This is a project that uses a range of animals to help children from hard places to learn about love and feelings and that they are valued. René recognised the immense value of animals in therapeutic work when exposing children to animals through gentle touch, stroking, feeding and playing with the animals.

The Author
"An animal is a prescription without side effects."
Do you love animals? Do you feel a connection with a furry friend? Do you believe animals offer something that can touch and heal a human heart?
'My Therapist and Other Animals' tells of the healing bond that can be created when animals are participants in our lives. These true stories document the loving connection between humans and those with whom we share a planet. Written by René Chorley, an experienced attachment therapist, it illustrates how animals can reach through the pain of abuse, neglect and trauma and reignite the ability to feel safe, cared for and valued.
Animals can make a difference in our lives. They are consistent and unconditional in their time, attention and affection, qualities that may be missing in the lives of so many. Each story brings to life a connection - whether it be an exceptional dog offering friendship or a squeaky guinea pig excited for feed time, our importance in their lives feeds our self-worth. These heart-warming stories prove that this connection has the power to overcome all.
